On the 19th of July 2019 we lost our cat Oscar after a short illness. He was a small cat with a big character.
Oscar decided he was going to leave his original owner and come and live with us five years ago when he spotted our new kitten through the window. He was about six months old at the time and was a rescue cat. Despite being returned to his owner on numerous occasions he would always come back to us every day and had obviously decided we were his forever home. Eventually his original owner became resigned to this and gave him to us with the words, “if I had wanted loyalty I would have bought a dog.”
Oscar would always want to be involved in whatever we were doing and would follow us around the house wherever we went. We weren’t able to let him in the bedroom at night as given the chance he felt it was necessary to do an hourly check to see if we were still alive by pushing his nose against ours. Despite this he would alway be waiting outside the bedroom door when we awoke and would greet us every morning with a meow and would rush down the stairs with us. When I would return home from work he would be waiting and would walk out to greet me and jump on the bonnet of the car looking through the windscreen meowing if I didn’t get out immediately. We would then walk up the path and through the front door together. In the evenings he would sleep on the sofa, having his head rubbed whilst we watched TV.
He would always make visitors to the house welcome and not even the most cat adverse visitors were immune to his charms. He would regularly visit our neighbours houses during the summer months when open doors would provide easy access and they would feed him tuna and other treats.
He was always a willing and photogenic model whenever I needed to try a newly purchased piece of camera equipment and he always featured on the Xmas cards given to friends and family.
Oscar
A week ago Oscar suddenly became very tired and just wanted to sleep and it was obvious that something was wrong. We took him to the vet who immediately admitted him to the animal hospital. After blood tests we were devestated to find out that he was suffering from untreatable kidney failure and the end came less than five days later.
During his short life Oscar brought joy and his own brand of silliness into our lives and my only regret is that he could not understand how much he was loved and how much he will be missed.
Sleep well Oscar you will always be in our hearts
